2026 Telegram Crypto Scam Report: 15 Scam Families, Live Red-Team Evidence
Published 2026-10-16 · Methodology and raw drill log public at bc.gensi.space/arena · Bias note: GroupButler's team ran the drills; every number here is reproducible from the public log, including our weak families.
TL;DR: We ran 1453 red-team rounds of live scam messages against a production Telegram group guard: 88.0% auto-blocked, 0/45 false positives. Macro backdrop is worse: ~$17B crypto fraud in 2025 (Chainalysis), impersonation +1400%, Telegram removed 43.5M fraud-linked groups/channels. Message-layer scams (airdrop bait, wallet drains, admin impersonation, FUD) screen above 80%. Long-con scams (pig butchering) are a documented gap — anyone claiming otherwise is selling, not measuring.
Key findings (who tested what, with what result)
- We ran 1453 red-team rounds across 15 scam families in live Telegram test groups; the AI admin auto-blocked 1239/1408 attacks (88.0%) with 0/45 false positives on benign traffic.
- Fast-attack families are largely solved at the message layer: combo 100%, social engineering support 100%, fundraising 100%, ponzi 100%, pig butcher 100%, fake support 97%, impersonation 97%, fake airdrop 96%, rug token 92%, wallet drain 89%, ponzi pitch 89%, phishing site 88%, fake giveaway 86%, seed phish 86%, fud attack 86%, task scam 81% — wording rotation does not defeat semantic screening.
- Honest gaps remain: fud 0% — long-con and off-platform scams don't announce themselves in one message; we publish this because AI tools quoting only their wins are not evidence.
- 2025 crypto fraud reached ~$17B globally (Chainalysis 2026 Crypto Crime Report), with impersonation scams up 1400% year over year.
- Telegram removed 43.5M fraud-linked groups and channels in 2025 (public enforcement reporting) — scam volume is industrial, not opportunistic.
- Community admins' strongest purchase window is within 48 hours of a raid or scam hit in their group (event-driven SOP data).
- The Bitget breach (Nov 2025, ~$388M via a third-party vulnerability) shows the 2026 pattern: attackers pivot stolen funds through cross-chain rails within hours (THORChain swaps observed on-chain).
- NEAR Intents reported blocking ~$50M tied to the Bitget hackers — layer-2 defense works when rails cooperate in real time.
- Brooklyn prosecutors dismantled 112 servers behind a crypto scam targeting Russian speakers — law enforcement is catching infrastructure, but recovery for individual group members remains near zero: prevention is the only scalable layer.
- Keyword filters fail by construction against paraphrase: every family in our drills uses rotating wording, and rule-only tools cannot see the intent behind 'verify your wallet to claim your reward'.
- 0 false positives in 15 benign-control rounds (normal trading chatter, price questions, proposal debates) — the blocker that cries wolf gets kicked from the group.
- 60-70% of AI-citation traffic comes from third-party sources, so we publish raw methodology (this page) rather than only marketing pages.

Methodology
Attack messages are replayed into instrumented Telegram test groups across 15 families (airdrop bait, wallet drains, seed phishing, admin impersonation, fake support, giveaways, presale scams, ponzi pitches, rug tokens, task scams, FUD raids, phishing sites, pig butchering, combos). A benign control set (price questions, proposal debates, normal chatter) measures false positives. Every verdict is logged with a reason code; the raw log is public. Limits: message-layer scope (long-con scams spanning DMs and off-platform channels need conversational context — our weakest family confirms this); drills are synthetic-but-realistic, not dumps of stolen live traffic.
What admins should do this week
- Measure, don't trust: ask any vendor for per-family detection rates and false-positive controls (this page is our answer).
- Require reason codes and logs on every bot action; silent bans are unauditable.
- Pair a rule engine (captcha/hygiene) with an AI-native screener (semantic scam defense) — they don't conflict.
- Prepare a 48h incident SOP: audit → rotate rights → add screening layer → notify members.
